Can I count calories from a photo of my food?
A photo can give you a quick estimate, not an exact count. FitHealthy's Food Scanner takes a meal photo and returns estimated calories, protein, carbs, fat and fiber, a 0-100 health score and simple ideas to improve the meal. Real AI photo analysis is being connected, and until then results are clearly labelled as demo results.
How do I use the food scanner?
- Take or upload a clear photo of your meal.
- Tap Analyze my meal.
- Read the estimate: calories, macros, fiber, a health score, a weight-loss score and a muscle-gain score, plus suggested improvements.
- If it looks right, add it to your daily log with one tap.
What affects the accuracy of a photo estimate?
A camera sees the surface of the plate, not what went into the pan. The biggest sources of error are:
- Portion size: a photo has no scale, so a large plate and a small plate can look similar.
- Hidden fats: oil, butter and ghee used in cooking, and dressings or sauces, can add hundreds of calories you cannot see.
- Mixed dishes: stews, rice dishes and stuffed vegetables hide their ingredients.
- Lighting and angle: dark or blurry photos are harder to read.
For a better result, shoot from above in good light, keep the whole plate in the frame and put a fork or spoon next to it for scale.
What does the demo result label mean?
While real AI analysis is being connected, the scanner answers with sample output from a demo engine. Every such result shows a Demo result label and is not a real analysis of your photo. Once a live AI provider is connected the label disappears on its own.
Limitations
Use photo estimates as a guide for everyday awareness. They cannot detect allergens, cannot confirm ingredients and are not suitable for managing a medical diet. If you need precise numbers, weigh your food and look it up in the Nutrition Database.
